To be materialistic means to have values that put a relatively high priority on making a lot of money and having many possessions, as well as on image and popularity, which are almost always expressed via money and possessions. Materialism is a by-product of economic progress in our society. Whether you like it or not, there are people out who will judge you from head to toe on the clothes and accessories you wear, on the car you drive and on the house and suburb you live in. The earlier speed was slow because population was not too much. See the demand and supply formula, the supply was enough (resources) and demand was less ( consumer/ population). Therefore there was no competition. It was the main reason people wouldn't give much importance to things, they used to give importance to relation and were more kind.
